Jordan: Ministry mulls universal health cover

Jordan Cabinet approves health plan implementation

Minister of Health Nathir Obeidat recently said that a proposal was currently being considered to introduce universal healthcare insurance in Jordan.

The minister said that unified referral entity involving multiple stakeholders would be set up in this regard, managed by the ministry of Health, involving the Social Security Corporation.

The proposal was made during a virtual meeting with members of the Country Status Report 2020, according to a report by Roya News. Reflecting on the enormous impact of the pandemic on the health system, Obeidat said that it affected the implementation of many of the 2019 report’s recommendations.

The head of the Coronavirus Portfolio Wael Hayajneh said the government should look into strengthing preventive medicine and pay more attention to chronic diseases after the pandemic ends.

Meeting participants stressed the need to increase the number of resident doctors, as well as expand residency programs and general specialties to back up subspecialties.
